World Languages

Language and communication make us human. Kansas must produce students who are proficient in English and at least one other language in order to contribute to a global society. Content on this webpage is intended to meet this purpose: “to improve the quality and support the growth of teaching and learning of world languages in Kansas.”

These documents have general information relevant to all World Language educators. Information on standards, assessments, visiting international teachers, and world language resources can be found using the "World Languages Quick Links" above.
Kansas Model Curricular Standards for World LanguagesAll world languages should base instruction on this set of standards. Standards-based guides for each language available for three levels. This link is also located in the World Languages Quick Links in the upper right hand corner of the page.
Kansas World Language Fact Sheet 
World Language Advisory CouncilTwenty-four K-12 teachers, department chair, curriculum coordinators, and post-secondary instructors convene three times per year to advise the KSDE Education Program Consultant for World Languages.
World Language AssessmentsEasy access to Kansas Benchmark (performance) assessment documents, and links to national and/or international summative assessments. This link is also located in the World Languages Quick Links in the upper right hand corner of the page.
World Language Connections to KCCRSThis presentation clarifies the connections between World Language Standards and the KCCRS in ELA, Math, History, Science, and English Language Proficiency. Use it for self-training or to present a workshop. To request a workshop, contact Phyllis Farrar.
World Language Enrollment Survey Report, 2011Analysis of enrollment data for world languages in the majority of Kansas districts. Data was collected by a survey of teachers in spring of 2011 concerning the 2010-2011 school year.
World Language Quality Survey Report, 2012Analysis of responses to 20 questions about program and instructional quality. Survey administered to KS teachers in spring of 2012 concerning the 2011-2012 school year.
