School Health Profiles

Overview of School Health Profiles
The School Health Profiles (SHP) is a survey that assesses school health policies and practices in states, large urban school districts, and territories. The School Health Profiles is conducted in the Spring of even-numbered years by the Kansas State Department of Education. The respondents are middle and high school principals and lead health education teachers from the sample selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The School Health Profiles monitors the current status of:

  • School health education requirements and content
  • Physical education and physical activity
  • Practices related to bullying and sexual harassment
  • School health policies related to tobacco-use prevention and nutrition
  • School-based health services
  • Family engagement and community involvement
  • School health coordination

Administration of School Health Profiles in Kansas
In Kansas, staff from the Kansas State Department of Education conduct the School Health Profiles (SHP) every other year during even-numbered years (2014, 2016, 2018, ...). Historically, paper surveys were mailed to the building principals of those schools that were randomly selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The principal received both the Principal survey and the Lead Health Educator survey. They were asked to forward the survey to the Lead Health Educator for them to complete. Once the surveys were completed, they were then mailed back to KSDE.

In 2018, KSDE implemented an online option of completing the SHP. To secure enough participation, paper surveys were mailed to supplement the online completion of the SHP.

School Selection
All Kansas public Middle/Junior High and High Schools are sent to the CDC along with sampling parameters to determine the size of the sample to be drawn. From this list, a random selection of these schools is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and sent to Kansas. Once the sample of schools is sent to KSDE staff, all selected schools are notified and their participation in the survey is requested.

KSDE staff has conducted the survey in each even-numbered years between 2006 and 2018. Click below to see some of the most pertinent results from the 2018 School Health Profiles for Kansas.
