The search for a new Kansas Commissioner of Education has officially opened with the position announcement and online application at www.macnjake.com.  The deadline to apply is Oct. 15, 2014. McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C. Executive Recruitment and Development will serve as search consultants and assist the Kansas State Board of Education in identifying and screening candidates. Former Education Commissioner Dr. Diane DeBacker resigned in May to accept a position overseas after serving as the state’s chief education officer since September 2010.


The Kansas State Board of Education consists of 10 elected officials, each representing a district comprised of four contiguous senatorial districts. Board members serve four-year terms with an overlapping schedule. Five positions will be up for re-election on the Board this year. These are for Districts 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. The primary is Aug. 5 and the general election is Nov. 4. Among the responsibilities of the State Board are to determine statewide curricular standards, establish high school graduation requirements, license K-12 educators, establish state accountability systems, implement and administer federal and state programs, accredit schools, and serve as the Board for the State School for the Deaf and the State School for the Blind.
