Current Events and Issues

Board reorganization, which occurs every two years, took place at the January meeting. Jim McNiece of District 10 was elected Chairman and Carolyn Wims-Campbell of District 4 was elected Vice Chairman. Board members welcomed Jim Porter who began a four-year term representing District 9. Results of other elected positions included Legislative Coordinator (Ken Willard) and Assistant Legislative Coordinator (Deena Horst), as well as the Board's Policy Committee of Jim Porter, Kathy Busch and Janet Waugh. State Board members will co-facilitate upcoming community conversations as part of a statewide tour about education. Parents, educators, members of the business community, school board members, legislators and other interested parties are encouraged to participate in these sessions that will help define the state's strategic plan for Kansas education. The next stops are:

Feb. 3 in Hays, Oakley and Garden City

Feb. 4 in Sublette and Parsons

Feb. 5 in Girard
