Human Services Cluster Overview

The pathway design sheets and course competencies for each are found under the pathway links below. The course competencies will direct the technical knowledge and skill needed for the professions found under Human Services.

The career and technical skill organization, Family, Community and Career Leaders of America (FCCLA), adds to the learning environment and personal growth by offering opportunities to develop leadership while classroom knowledge and skills are applied in authentic work and community related situations. Early Childhood Development and Services (CIP Code: 19.0709)
The Early Childhood Development and Services pathway focuses on the careers relating to meeting the needs of children (birth to age five), be they providers in home, community, educational or institutional settings and includes child growth and development, nutrition, recreation, planning and supervising learning activities; child abuse and neglect prevention, working with parents and the legal and administrative requirements of the field. This industry impacts the Kansas economy by close to $1 billion when both the $340+ million of provider earned income is combined with the over $640 million value of their parents who can work because they have care. Careers range from preschool teacher to child care center manager with annual salary ranges from $17,000 to $103,000.  This is a high demand field and expected to grow as policies related to expanding quality early care access and kindergarten readiness are made.

Family, Community and Consumer Services (CIP Code: 19.0799)
The Family Community and Consumer Services pathway focuses on careers relating to meeting the essential needs of people which range from social and emotional wellness to financial and physical health because they are inter-related.  Occupations which focus on relationships between and among family members including family counseling, marriage therapy, non-profit management and others related to helping others are a focus but also those related to personal and family financial goal setting, credit counseling and resource support. This is not customer service or the banking professions, but those related to helping people manage their finances or to regain credit stability. This pathway is unique in that the entire human condition is included.

Fashion, Apparel and Interior Design (FAID) (CIP Code: 19.0999)
Fashion, Apparel and Interior Design (FAID is part of Human Services as this multi-million dollar industry crosses many clusters, but is very strongly linked with the needs of humans as well as an extension of their sense of self and financial status.  Careers are based on the emerging needs of the Kansas City resident designer movement as well as the entrepreneurial endeavors across the state.  Over thirty FAID related businesses are found in Kansas which indicates Kansas has a strong need for developing the technical skill set for this field. Course competencies have been developed with the direct input of industry.  This placement is also aligned with the national educational systems where FAID courses and CIP codes are found under Family and Consumer Sciences/Human Services.

Wage & Employment Information

The Occupational Employment & Wage Statistics (OEWS) program provides annual employment and wage estimates by occupation. Data is collected through a semi-annual survey conducted by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) in partnership with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS calculates employment and wage estimates for each of the states, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, and Balance-of-State areas within each state. To better meet the needs of local users, KDOL’s Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division produces employment and wage estimates for geographic areas not produced by the BLS; these include Local Workforce Investment Areas, projection regions, and counties. Due to confidentiality and quality criteria, LMIS cannot produce estimates for every occupation in every geographic area. State created areas are not validated by BLS, and therefore, are not official BLS data series. However, the LMIS staff feels that they provide additional information that is useful to the users of Kansas data. Please visit the Kansas Labor Information Center (KLIC) website. Link below.
