TOPEKA – May 16, 2011 - Recommendations from the Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) on the use of seclusion and restraint for children with disabilities was on the agenda when the State Board of Education met Tuesday, May 10, in Topeka. Last January, the State Board asked SEAC to review the state’s procedures for seclusion and restraint and provide recommendations.

TOPEKA – The State Board of Education’s request for flexibility in how Kansas schools are held accountable for meeting performance requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation was denied today by the U.S. Department of Education.   View Article

TOPEKA – Members of the State Board of Education considered an alternative proposal for ensuring the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE) is notified in a timely manner whenever a licensed educator is involved in activities that could lead to the revocation of a license after an initial proposal drew criticism from educators and teacher organizations. The criticisms came during a public hearing conducted April 12, the first day of the Board’s two-day April meeting in Topeka, which focused on proposed changes to the educator licensure regulations.

TOPEKA— For the second consecutive year, students at Baldwin High School, USD 348 Baldwin City, have placed in the national Real World Design Challenge. Earlier this week, the team was awarded third place in the national design competition, coming in behind teams from Connecticut and Washington.

TOPEKA – Eight Kansas high school seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The program recognizes some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors, as well as those who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.

TOPEKA – Kansas is one of three states awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to supplement the traditional Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) by providing food backpacks to low-income children over weekends in the summer months.   View Article
