The winners of the state design for the 2009 U.S. Department of Energy’s Real World Design Challenge will be announced and honored in a ceremony Tuesday in the Office of Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

Students from ten states participated in the first annual Real World Design Challenge. Kansas supplied eight qualifying designs, the most in the nation, following the theme of “Aviation and Fuel Consumption.” Each team used professional engineering software in order to redesign an existing aircraft in order to improve its fuel efficiency without reducing the overall performance of the aircraft.

Dignitaries in attendance will include Governor Sebelius and KS Commissioner of Education Dr. Alexa Posny. The students, their coaches, principal, superintendent, and staff from KSDE will also be in attendance.

A press release will be posted on the KSDE website at 9:30 a.m. listing the recipients of the award. A picture will be available on the website after 11 a.m.
