Jana Shaver was elected to serve as Chairman of the State Board of Education in January of 2013 for a term to run through 2014. She has been elected to serve as State Board Vice Chair for 2009 through 2010. Representing District 9, Mrs. Shaver has twenty-seven years of experience as a public school teacher and curriculum director in Independence, Kansas. She taught second grade for eight years, worked for five years as a reading specialist and spent fourteen years as a curriculum director working with teachers in grades K-12 planning curriculum to align with Kansas Standards. During her career, she worked as a North Central Association chairperson in over thirty Kansas schools seeking accreditation through the Kansas NCA/QPA process. Mrs. Shaver also served as a teaching assistant and adjunct professor at Pittsburg State University for several years.
A native Kansan, Jana graduated from Fredonia High School, graduated from Independence Community College, and received a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Specialist in Education from Pittsburg State University. Prior to joining the State Board of Education, Mrs. Shaver served for over nine year on the Independence Community College Board of Trustees and was elected president of the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees for 2005-06 She was appointed as Chair of the Board Policy Committee for 2009-2010.
An active participant in her community, Jana has served on the advisory boards of Mercy Health Systems of Kansas; Independence Mercy Hospital Foundation; Independence Community College Endowment Association; Inge Theatre Festival; Independence Historical Museum, and the First United Methodist Church Pre-School.
Jana lives in Independence. Her son Todd Taylor and stepdaughter, Melissa Hadley, and their families also reside in Independence. Stepdaughter Dr. Melinda Shaver is a clinical psychologist at the United Methodist Children’s Home in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Jana values education and believes in the importance of providing a quality education to all students in Kansas. She believes that the economic vitality of our state begins with teaching basic skills to prepare students for the workplace while setting challenging standards to educate students to seek career training or higher education to prepare them for the 21st century. Mrs. Shaver is proud to be able, as a member of the Kansas Board of Education, to use her practical, hands-on experience to serve the students of Kansas.
