License Applications

Before you apply or renew a License...

You must submit one fingerprint card and a $50 fee for the purpose of a KBI and FBI background clearance if:

  • You are applying for your first Kansas license
  • Your most recent Kansas certificate/license has expired
  • You have never submitted a fingerprint card or fee as part of any previous application for a Kansas certificate or license

If you are downloading an initial out-of-state or out-of-country application, you will need to order a fingerprint card.

Check your current credential at License Lookup. (Use of the incorrect renewal application may result in submission of incorrect renewal requirements and/or delay in processing).
Application processing time is 6-8 weeks.

NEW»» Fingerprint Requirement Change Effective November 15, 2014
At their September 2014 meeting, the Kansas State Board of Education adopted regulation changes regarding requirements for a fingerprint based records check. These changes will affect veteran educators who have never submitted fingerprints as part of any previous application for a Kansas certificate or license issued by the Kansas State Department of Education.

EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 15, 2014:
Any person submitting any of the following will ALSO be required to submit AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION, a complete set of fingerprints and the required fee:
  • An application for the first Kansas certificate or license;
  • An application for renewal of an expired Kansas certificate or license; or
  • NEW»» An application for renewal of a valid Kansas certificate or license, if the person has never submitted fingerprints as part of any previous application for a Kansas certificate or license.

    • Initial Teaching License
    • Initial School Specialist License (School Counselor, School Psychologist, Reading Specialist, Library Media Specialist)
    • Initial School Leadership License (District or Building Level)
    • Added Endorsement(s) to an Existing License That Required Completing an Approved Program (If adding a teaching endorsement by testing only, use Form 22)
    • Standard Substitute License
    • One-Year Nonrenewable License
