High-Quality Instructional Materials Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed the high-quality instructional materials survey. The New Teacher Project (TNTP) is reviewing and summarizing the data for review. The data will be used to help KSDE determine next steps that will be taken to support districts in their selection of high-quality instructional materials. 

School Improvement and Accreditation

Facilitator Applications

The selection process and assignments for facilitators is underway. The following are the next steps in the process:

  • Notification of all applicants.
  • Initial facilitator training will be scheduled soon.
  • Trainings will be done regionally and in-person.
  • Ongoing updates will be provided virtually.

 

Regional spring, summer and fall KESA 2.0 informational sessions

These informational sessions will be held at the locations listed below. The morning sessions will run 9:30-11:30 a.m. and the afternoon sessions will run from 12:30-2:30 p.m. 

  • May 7 – Greenbush South (AM and PM)
  • May 8 – Greenbush North (AM and PM)

KESA 2.0 State Board Action

The KESA 2.0 model shall ensure that districts will be accredited based on the four fundamentals, the five board outcomes, student outcomes, and compliance. The model shall also account for current accreditation regulations.

The Kansas State Board of Education expects an updated, actionable model to be presented for approval by the State Board once it is developed. An actionable model would be one that clearly lays out expectations for various levels of accreditation, timelines involved, and responsibilities of KSDE, districts, and the Accreditation Review Council (ARC) so that all aspects are in place prior to implementation.

 

The actionable model will:

  • Focus on instruction.
  • Build coherence.
  • Promote sustainability.

 

The Kansas Every Child Can Read Act (K.S.A. 72-3262):

  • Went into effect on July 1, 2023.
  • Intended to promote third-grade literacy.
  • Requires the science of reading, evidence-based instruction.
  • Utilizes the KSDE’s Dyslexia Handbook.
  • Ensures competencies are met in the following areas:
    • Phonics
    • Vocabulary Development
    • Reading Fluency
    • Reading Comprehension

 

Reporting for the Kansas Every Child Can Read Act

Each school district will submit a report that includes the following:

  • Literacy interventions and the outcomes of the interventions.
    • Any programs used for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students.
    • Fall and spring aggregate screening data (and the screener used)
  • The number of third-grade students in the district.
  • The screening and assessment data the district used to evaluate literacy.
  • The percent of students and subgroups who are “proficient” and moving towards “proficient” in each district.
  • KSDE will submit a report to the governor’s office and the legislature.

 

At-Risk Evidence-Based Information

The current at-risk evidence-based list is available, as well as the provisional application for school districts. The vendor at-risk application is available and you may share it with any vendors that express interest to you.  Please submit your questions to stateatrisk@ksde.org.
