Applications are now open for the 2024 Renew America’s School Prize, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Renew America’s Schools Team. The team was created to promote the implementation of clean energy improvements at K-12 public schools across the country. It aims to help school communities make energy upgrades that will decrease energy use and cost, improve indoor air quality, and foster healthier learning environments.

The Fall KSDE 2023 Vacancy report indicated that Kansas had 1,810 certified openings, with the highest numbers being in elementary education and special education.

Teacher mentor programs are now open. Districts that entered potential mentor teachers into the system by the fall deadline will now: (1) validate the list of mentors; (2) enter mentees; (3) enter assignments by assigning mentors to mentees; and (4) submit the final stipend request.

By opting into the Kansas State Department of Education and IXL Math contract, school districts are required to provide data on math practice for the 2023-2024 school year twice a year. IXL has provided a reporting webinar to learn how to save and submit the reports.

Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) requires states to set their own state determined performance levels (SDPLs) following specific criteria and processes outlined in the law. Kansas is required to establish 2024-2025 SDPLs to continue receiving the federal funding under Perkins V.

The Kansas State Department of Education has reviewed all programs and practices from the 2022-2023 approved list. Those that are no longer on the state at-risk list for the 2024-2025 school year will not be eligible for state at-risk funding without provisional approval from KSDE. The Kansas Volunteer Commission has announced the Youth Civic Engagement mini-grant, which supports the civic engagement of youth in grades K-12. For this grant, applicants must engage youth in the planning and implementation of grant activities. Priority will be given to applications that include youth-led and youth-initiated projects.

The KSDE School Bus Safety Unit is offering a five-hour informational workshop for any mechanic performing the Part I Mechanical School/Activity Bus Safety Inspection. This workshop is designed to provide information to assist mechanics who perform this inspection, which is required by KSDE School Bus Regulations. Class instructors will be personnel from the Kansas Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program.
