Enrollment Count Day is Wednesday, Sept. 20

Kansas statute designates Sept. 20 as Enrollment Count Day, the date that is used to determine the number of students regularly enrolled for funding purposes.

If the 20th doesn’t fall on a school day, the count day moves to the first school day following the 20th. This year, the Count Day is Wednesday, Sept. 20.

A school’s general fund budget is determined by taking the district’s total adjusted weighted enrollment, times the base aid for student excellence (BASE). For the 2023-2024 school year, the BASE is $5,088.

All students should be enrolled and attending school on the official count date. Avoid scheduling staff training or parent-teacher conferences on the official student count date.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) encourages district personnel to review the School Term guideline document, “1,116 Hours School Year Requirement,” which is located on the School Finance homepage at Guidelines and Manuals

This annual school term requirement must be met by school districts for state aid and accreditation purposes. Use the guideline document to help determine the common activities that can and can’t be counted toward the school term requirement.

The document includes a summary of state law and recordkeeping requirements and explains the inclement weather/snow day provision.
