KSDE’s School Bus Safety Unit offering Transportation Basics Workshops

Kansas State Department of Education’s School Bus Safety Unit is hosting free Transportation Basics Workshops for transportation directors and supervisors in July. 

The workshops will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with a break for lunch, which is on your own. 

Dates and locations are as follows: 

  • July 11: Dodge City USD 443 District Office Building, 2112 First Ave., Dodge City. 
  • July 12: Hageman Education Center, Salina USD 305, 409 West Cloud, Salina. 
  • July 13: Kansas City USD 500 Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St. in Kansas City, Kansas. 

The registration deadline is July 6. 

Workshops are recommended and designed for new directors or supervisors. However, any transportation director/supervisor is welcome to attend. 

Workshops are open to any public or private school transportation directors, transportation supervisors, school transportation contractors and other school officials involved in school transportation. No vendors are allowed. 

The workshops are designed to give attendees a brief overview of the fundamentals and responsibilities associated with the position. Also covered are recent updates, changes and developments, including: 

  • Bus driver requirements. 
  • Alcohol and drug testing. 
  • Drug and alcohol clearing house. 
  • Commercial driver’s license requirements. 
  • Physicals. 
  • School bus regulations. 
  • Legal responsibilities of the transportation director. 
  • Two- and one-half mile rule. 
  • Out-of-district transportation. 
  • Bus requirements. 
  • ELDT (Entry Level Driving Training). 
  • COVID-19.
