  • Represents the following school districts, primarily in southeastern Kansas, District 9
  • First term on State Board, 2015; immediate past Chairman
  • Committee Assignments: Legislative Liaison, Professional Standards Board, Capital Improvement Bond and Interest Review Committee, Governor's Education Council, Kansas Fire Marshal Advisory Committee, Governmental Affairs Committee for the National Association of State Boards of Education 
  • 47 years in public education, including 34 as Superintendent of Schools
  • Civic leadership includes serving on the Fredonia Library Board and with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of the 31st Judicial District, plus former Fredonia Hospital Board of Trustees member
  • Church music director for more than 30 years, including director of the Fredonia Community Choir

Mr. Porter is a long-time public school educator, spending part of his career teaching music to students in grades kindergarten through high school. As a school administrator, he has experience as both a building principal and superintendent. Mr. Porter has served as an adjunct education instructor for a number of universities at both the undergraduate and graduate level, plus was administrator in a professional development center. He and his wife Charlene live in Fredonia. They have three grown children and four grandchildren.
