Four professional development sessions on dyslexia available for use

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is offering free access to videos and support documents from four professional development sessions that were provided this summer.

Jeri Powers, a KSDE Teacher Leader Consultant, and Dr. Laurie Curtis, KSDE’s Early Literacy/Dyslexia program manager, along with other guest presenters, provided the professional development sessions based on the book “Overcoming Dyslexia” (second edition).

The book, authored by dyslexia expert Sally Shaywitz, provides content that provoked good conversation and discussion as nearly 200 participants each week listened and learned about dyslexia.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to David Hurford, Stacey Cates, the Ricker family and Jim Porter for their willingness to give their time and expertise toward this effort,” Curtis said.

If you would like to utilize any or all of the sessions in your school’s Professional Development Community (PLC) time or in a wider professional learning opportunity, feel free to access the videos and support documents on the KSDE Dyslexia page under the Professional Learning section or by selecting Overcoming Dyslexia Study 2023.

For more information, email Curtis at lcurtis@ksde.org.
