Dozens gather at Statehouse in Topeka for School Mental Health Advocacy Day

The first-floor rotunda of the Kansas State Capitol was busy Thursday, Jan. 26, as dozens of people gathered for the seventh annual School Mental Health Advocacy Day.

The event is sponsored by the Kansas School Counselor Association, Kansas School Nurses Organization, Kansas School Social Workers Association and the Kansas Association of School Psychologists.

Ann Mah, a Kansas State Board of Education member, was one of the guest speakers. Kent Reed and Shanna Hailey, with the Kansas State Department of Education, attended the event.

The School Mental Health Advocacy Day is an opportunity for school counselors, nurses, psychologists and social workers to have a unified voice to advocate for increased school-based mental health support for students, according to documents provided by the groups.

Professional development was offered in the morning. An afternoon session was designed to allow participants to attend hearings and meet with local legislators to share information about school-based mental health.
