School social workers gather for fall conference

School social workers, social work students and retired social workers from across Kansas gathered Friday, Oct. 28, at the Double Tree Hotel in Lawrence for the Kansas School Social Workers Association's Fall Conference, said Shanna Hailey, coordinator of school mental health on the Special Education and Title Services (SETS) team.

Friday morning's speaker was Dr. Evisha Ford, a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW). Ford spoke about therapeutic intervention with youth on the autism spectrum and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Ryan Lindsay, who has a master's in social work, was the afternoon speaker. He discussed risk assessments, safety planning, school-based suicide prevention policies, and practices using an equity lens.

"KSSWA is looking forward to the spring conference in April, as well as School Mental Health Advocacy Day at the state Capitol on Jan. 26," Hailey said.
