Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson was surprised Friday, Aug. 28, with the USA-Kansas Outstanding Service Award during the organization’s virtual annual conference.
G.A. Buie, executive director of USA-Kansas, presented the award to Watson at the Landon State Office Building while Watson was presenting virtually to conference attendees.
“When Randy’s name came up, I was excited,” Buie said. “He fits the mold perfectly for this award.”
Each year, USA-Kansas recognizes one member of the organization with the award. Nominations are accepted by USA-Kansas members, and then a selection panel determines the recipient, Buie said.
The award is the highest distinction USA-Kansas bestows, according to the organization’s website, usakansas.org.
“The Outstanding Service Award recipient has made significant contributions to the profession, demonstrated exemplary leadership and established a meaningful impression on Kansas education,” the website states. “Individual attributes considered for the award include innovative, integrity, service to others and commitment to the organization.”
USA-Kansas has been honoring members with the award since 1985. More information on the award and a list of past recipients are available at https://www.usakansas.org/awards-and-recognition
