Planning assistance, grants available for schools, communities interested in Safe Routes to School

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Safe Routes to School program is providing planning assistance and kick-start grants to schools and communities interested in Safe Routes to School. 

The application period opens Sept. 22 and closes Nov. 17. 

Eligible projects include: 

  • Safe Routes to School plans. 
  • Creation and reproduction of promotional and educational materials. 
  • Bicycle and pedestrian safety curricula, materials and trainers. 
  • Training, including SRTS training workshops for school- and community-level audiences. 
  • Costs for data gathering, analysis and evaluation reporting at the local project level. 
  • Startup costs for additional law enforcement or equipment needed for enforcement activities around schools. 
  • Demonstration projects
  • Traffic gardens
