Free family engagement survey available for Kansas schools, districts

n 2022, the Kansas State Department of Education’s Technical Assistance System Network (TASN), Kansas Parent Information Resource Center (KPIRC) and TASN Evaluation Team, developed and updated a free family engagement survey designed to inform district and building leaders about their district’s/building’s success at engaging parents in the education of children.

The report generated from this survey can provide useful information for the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation process and school improvement planning.

The survey is designed to be distributed to each student’s parents/guardians and measures five domains based on the PTA National Family School Partnership Standards endorsed by the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE) in 2008.

  • Do staff members create a welcoming environment for families?
  • Do staff members collaborate with families in supporting student learning?
  • Do staff members practice effective communication with families regarding their children’s education?
  • Do staff members practice sharing power and advocacy with families regarding their children’s education?
  • Do staff members facilitate community involvement?

The survey is quick and easy to complete online, resulting in a high response rate. It also:

  • Empowers families to effect meaningful change in district/school culture.
  • Produces reliable results across grade levels.
  • When used in conjunction with other data, the survey provides administrators and educators the opportunity to recognize strengths in their family engagement practices and create strategies for improvement.
  • Keeps responses confidential. No personally identifiable data is included in the automatically generated summary reports.

The updated survey includes demographic data for districts/schools to identify supports needed for subgroups such as: Free and Reduced Lunch, Race/Ethnicity, English Language Learners and Families with students with a disability.
