Eighty-nine Percent of Schools Make AYP in 2007

In the 2006 – 07 testing cycle, 89% of the state’s public schools made adequate yearly progress (AYP), even though the targets for mathematics and reading have been steadily increasing since 2002. This compares with 84% of public schools making AYP last year.  Student achievement continues to rise in Kansas.

“The good news is that more Kansas schools are achieving their goals in reading and math.  This is true even though these same goals increased substantially over last year.  By a persistent focus on academic success, Kansas educators are clearly meeting the challenge of educating all students to a high standard,” according to the Kansas Commissioner of Education, Dr. Alexa Posny.

In accordance with federal legislation which requires states to annually assess the progress its schools and districts are making toward having all students meet or exceed state standards on assessments of reading and mathematics by 2014, KSDE is releasing the attached list of accredited public schools and districts not making AYP for the 2006-07 school year. Each district/school had the opportunity to review their state assessment, attendance, and graduation data; make corrections; and file an appeal if they disagreed with the AYP data. The list of accredited private schools not making AYP will be released with the report card data in October.

The mathematics targets for the 2006 – 2007 testing cycle were 66.8% for K-8 and 55.7% for
9 – 12. The reading targets for the 2006 – 2007 testing cycle were 69.5% for K-8 and 65.0% for 9 – 12.

There are 33 districts and 154schools on the list for the 2006 – 2007 testing cycle. This compares to 31 districts and 187 schools on last year’s list. They are as follows:
