Public comments sought on NCLB waiver request -
In February, Kansas will be submitting to the U.S. Department of Education a request for waivers from some of the provisions of the No Child Left Behind legislation, including some of the accountability provisions. A draft of the state’s waiver request is available for public review and comment on the KSDE website. In addition, KSDE is hosting a free webinar/LiveMeeting for the public to discuss the request. The webinar will be Jan. 26 at 8:30 a.m. and no registration is required. More information about the webinar is available here
2012 Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program -
The 2012 Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) will provide up to 24 U.S. teachers and administrators the opportunity to travel to San Francisco and Japan to learn about ESD efforts and
strengthen ESD curricula in both countries. Applications to participate in the program are due by Jan. 31, 2012. More information about the program, as well as a program application, can be found on the organization’s website

Race To The Top Early Learning Challenge Grant -
State officials were informed Dec. 16 that Kansas was not among the nine states selected to receive funds through the
Race To The Top Early Learning Challenge Grant. More information about the grant and the states selected to receive
the funds can be found on the U.S. Department of Education website.

Teacher Leader assessment pilot -
Are you a Teacher Leader? If you are interested in participating in a pilot of a new Teacher Leader assessment, please review the eligibility and other requirements for participation. There is no cost to participate and because you would be helping to set the cut score for future applicants, there is no minimum score requirement. Additional benefits for those who complete all pilot requirements include a $50 gift card compliments of Educational Testing Services, and the opportunity to apply to have the Teacher Leader endorsement added to your license.

Get involved in the Summer Food Service Program -
Your organization can help prevent children from going hungry during the summer months when school is out and they no longer have access to free or reduced price school lunches. Through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, your organization can be reimbursed for meals served to children during the summer. Schools, churches, recreation centers, playgrounds, parks and camps can all serve meals in neighborhoods with high percentages of low-income families. Learn more about the Summer Food Service Program and how your organization can be involved by participating in a free webinar. A schedule of upcoming webinars can be found on the USDA website 
FERPA amendments finalized -
Final regulations amending the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) have been published in the Federal Register. Effective Jan. 3, 2012, the regulations offer greater flexibility to states to share data that can be helpful in judging the effectiveness of educational programs, while maintaining safeguards to student privacy. OER offers access to free learning resources -
Kansas educators can gain easy access to a variety of free digital resources through the Kansas State Department of  Education’s Open Education Resources website. Open Education Resources (OER) provides links to digital textbooks, E-books and thousands of free online books, as well as links to resources for the visually impaired. All of the resources on OER are in the public domain and can be customized and modified to fit individual needs, or combined with other materials. These resources are ideal for teaching, learning, research and more. Check out the Open Education

TOPEKA, KS – Governor Sam Brownback signed a proclamation on Jan. 4, 2012 declaring January as Kansas Mentoring Month to recognize the importance of mentoring and to encourage more Kansans to serve as mentors in their communities.
