Kansas workshops will highlight Individual Plans of Study and Academic/Career Advising

The following workshops, focusing on Individual Plans of Study and Academic/Career Advising, will take place in April. If interested, please check with the Service Center closest to you in order to reserve a spot.

When and where:

9 a.m.-Noon, April 4: Southwest Plains Education Service Center at Sublette

9 a.m.-Noon and 1-3 p.m., April 6: (Two sessions) South Central Education Service Center at Clearwater

9 a.m.-Noon, April 12: Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Greenbush

9 a.m.-Noon, April 14: Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Eudora

No charge to attendees.

This workshop, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, will provide assistance and support to schools relative to the following new Kansas State Board of Education’s outcomes:

  • High School Graduation Rates
  • Post-Secondary Completion/Attendance
  • Individual Plan of Study (IPS), focused on career interest
  1. IPS Toolkit Initiative (Jay Scott, assistant director for Career and Technical Education, and Kathleen Mercer, Career Pathway coordinator)

The first segment of this workshop will be devoted to discussion of the IPS tool and possible funding opportunities that will pay for the setup charge for an approved interest inventory.

  1. Academic and Career Advising (Kent Reed, KSDE school counseling consultant, and three local schools)

The second component of the agenda will focus on academic and career advising, specifically how local schools address the three models currently being utilized in Kansas schools:

1. Counselor-centered

2. Career advisor system – all staff

3. Career advocates

Discussion also will include how the IPS is implemented within that advising model.
