Challenge encourages employer-supported volunteering

Twenty-one Kansas employers are competing in this year’s Give Back Kansas Challenge, which runs from April 1 through May 31, 2024. The purpose of the challenge is to engage Kansans in employer-supported volunteering.

Members of the Kansas State Board of Education during their April business meeting signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formally establish the Kansas Advisory Council for Indigenous Education (KACIE). This is a partnership with the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) and the state’s four Native American tribes.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) announced this week that 92 Kansas high school seniors have earned the recognition as 2024 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars. The announcement was made during the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 9.

Amber Pagan, a Pre-K teacher at Nieman Elementary School, Shawnee Mission Unified School District 512, and Ryan Mellick, an industrial technology teacher at Bonner Springs High School, Bonner Springs USD 204, were named Region 3 finalists for the 2025 Kansas Teacher of the Year award during a ceremony on Sunday, April 7.

Kansas State Board of Education members will hear presentations on teacher retention and bus safety; will hold a public hearing on the Professional Practices Commission (PPC) regulations; and will hear a presentation on state assessment development and the need for data literacy and analysis in a balanced assessment system.

The Kansas State Board of Education will conduct its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday March 13. Both days of the meeting will take place in Topeka as usual.
