Kansas Volunteer Commission awards $3,900 for 9/11 National Day of Service

The Kansas Volunteer Commission (KVC) awarded a total of $3,900 to eight organizations to support Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

The awardees will host volunteer projects and service activities honoring those who died and those who served on 9/11. The organizations and the amount of funding they received are:

  • Wabaunsee Unified School District 329: $500
  • Four County Mental Health Center - RSVP: $500
  • Barton County College - RSVP: $500
  • Burrton USD 369: $500
  • Elizabeth B. Ballard Community Center: $500
  • Boys & Girls Club of Topeka: $500
  • Children First CEO Kansas Inc. : $500
  • Youth Volunteer Corps: $400

The Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of an effort originally launched in 2002 by 9/11 family members and support groups who worked to establish the charitable service day as a forward-looking way to honor 9/11 victims, survivors and others who rose up in service response to the attacks.

In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) with supporting this effort across the country. With funding from the CNCS, KVC is working with organizations across Kansas to engage volunteers in tribute projects.
