Reminder offered on compliance with dental screening requirements

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s (KDHE) Bureau of Oral Health has provided the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) with a report of schools in various levels of compliance with state law K.S.A. 72-6252.

This law requires school districts to provide free dental inspections annually for all school-attending students, except those who hold a certificate from a legally qualified dentist showing that an examination has been made within the previous three months.

In the coming weeks, KSDE’s Accreditation and Design (AD) team will contact districts not in compliance with this state law to help them work toward full compliance with this legal obligation.

72-6251: Annual free dental inspection; exceptions. The boards of education of cities of the first and second class and school boards of school districts are hereby required to provide for free dental inspection annually for all children, except those who hold a certificate from a legally qualified dentist showing that this examination has been made within three months last past, attending such schools.
