Career and Technical Education (CTE) Specialized Certificate Requirements

​CTE Specialized Certificate Requirements:

  1. Verification of occupational competency:
    1. Industry recognized certificate in the technical profession and five years of full-time work experience in that technical profession OR
    2. If hired in a .5FTE or less assignment, verification of ONE of the following, dependent upon the technical content area:
      1. Recognized trade competency exam (for example, NOCTI carpentry exam for residential carpentry)
      2. Occupational license (nursing license for health sciences; law license for law and public safety)
      3. Appropriate degree (business degree business management)
      4. Industry recognized credential (applicable especially for information technology pathway)
      5. 2 years (4000 hours) of occupational work experience related to the CTE area (experience as a chef for culinary arts)
  2. Request for issuance from a school district that authorizes the applicant to teach identified courses

CTE Specialized Certificate:

  1. Allows individuals with appropriate occupational knowledge and skills to teach in a CTE pathway assignment
  2. Valid only in the Kansas school district requesting the issuance of the certificate and identified on the certificate
  3. Valid only to teach in the CTE courses authorized by the hiring district and identified on the certificate
  4. Valid for three school years
  5. Valid for grades 8-12
  6. Renewable with a request for issuance by a hiring district and application for renewal

Steps for completing an online application: 
 
  1. Click on the register button to display the KSDE User Registration Form.
  2. Follow the steps to complete the registration process.
  3. Log in with the username and password you created to see the KSDE Web Applications link.
  4. Click on the “License Application” menu option to access the application form you need.
  5. Fill in the form and submit.
  6. You can monitor the progress of your application using the Educator License Lookup.
 
*Do not log-in with the username and password you may use to access KEEP or other KSDE authenticated applications.
