Kansas Volunteer Commission Responds to

Camp Alexander Closing

Camp Alexander is one of 10 organizations awarded an AmeriCorps cost-reimbursement grant for the 2013-2014 program year. In light of Camp Alexander’s announcement on Friday, August 1, that it would be closing its doors effective immediately, the Kansas Volunteer Commission (KVC), which administers the AmeriCorps reimbursement grant program for Kansas, is currently reviewing Camp Alexander’s financial records to determine if any further action is warranted.

As a cost-reimbursement grant, AmeriCorps funds are distributed monthly on an expense reimbursement basis. AmeriCorps grantees submit monthly reimbursement requests to the Kansas Volunteer Commission; reimbursement requests must be based on actual expenditures that have already been recorded.  The KVC then reviews the reimbursement request to ensure the program is requesting funds that fall within their approved grant budget.  Once the request is approved, funds are sent to the grantee the following month. As an example, expenses incurred in July are submitted for reimbursement in August. Once approved, reimbursement is sent to the grantee organization in early September. The reimbursement schedule results in grantee organizations receiving reimbursement checks each month. Camp Alexander has received a reimbursement check each month since September 2013.
