Opportunity to meet candidate for superintendent at Kansas State Schools for the Deaf and Blind takes place Friday, April 7

The first opportunity to meet a candidate for the position of superintendent at the Kansas State Schools for the Deaf and Blind will take place today, Friday, April 7, 2017.

The first candidate is Luanne Barron.

Barron is currently the assistant superintendent for the Kansas State School for the Deaf. Barron has had this position since 2010.

Her previous positions at the Kansas State School for the Deaf were director of instruction and 7-12 building principal. Prior to coming to Kansas, Barron was a literary teacher at the Iowa School for the Deaf and an English instructor and English department chair at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf.

Barron has more than 30 years of experience in the field of education with a focus on deaf and hard-of-hearing children. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Galludet University. She earned master’s degrees from Western Maryland College and the University of Kansas. 

Madeleine Burkindine, current superintendent of the Kansas Schools for the Deaf and Blind, will retire at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. The Kansas State Board of Education is conducting a search to hire a new superintendent to oversee both schools.

Candidate names will be announced the morning of their scheduled interviews.

The first meeting will take place from 11 a.m. to noon today, Friday, April 7, at the Kansas State School for the Deaf, 450 E. Park St. in Olathe, and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. today at Kansas State School for the Blind, 1100 State Ave. in Kansas City, Kan.
