Second opportunity to meet candidate for superintendent position at Kansas State Schools for the Deaf and Blind takes place April 10

The second opportunity to meet a candidate for the position of superintendent at the Kansas State Schools for the Deaf and Blind will take place today, Monday, April 10.

The second candidate is Thomas Lawson.

Lawson is currently the director of special services for Spring Hill Unified School District 230. Lawson has had this position since 2007.

Lawson previously served as executive director of the San Juan Board of Cooperative Special Educational Services; adjutant instructor of education at Adams State University, College of Education; assistant professor at Pittsburg State University, College of Education; superintendent of schools at Eureka USD 389; director of curriculum and instruction and language arts teacher in Osawatomie; and the director of education at the Osawatomie State Hospital. 
Lawson has more than 30 years of experience in the field of education, 26 of which have been in leadership/administration positions.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University and earned his doctorate’s degree from Kansas State University.

Madeleine Burkindine, current superintendent of the Kansas Schools for the Deaf and Blind, will retire at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. The Kansas State Board of Education is conducting a search to hire a new superintendent to oversee both schools.
Candidate names will be announced the morning of their scheduled interviews.

Today’s meeting will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Kansas State School for the Deaf, 450 E. Park St. in Olathe, and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Kansas State School for the Blind, 1100 State Ave. in Kansas City, Kan.
