State Board of Education adopts new strategic plan
Goals and objectives will govern work through December 2012
TOPEKA – Following three months of work, the State Board of Education in May approved a new strategic agenda that will guide the Board’s work through December 2012. In arriving at their four goals and 15 associated objectives, State Board members considered more than 150 recommendations prepared by various councils and commissions.
“We were fortunate to have the work of the Kansas Education Commission, the Governor’s Commission on Graduation and Dropout Prevention and Recovery and the Kansas P-20 Council to inform our decisions about priorities in Kansas education,” said State Board Chairman David Dennis. “I’m proud of the work that was done by the Board and of the strategic goals and objectives we adopted. I’m looking forward to working over the next two years to achieve our objectives.”
The State Board reviews its strategic agenda every two years. The four primary goals adopted to direct the work of the Board over the next two years are:
• Provide a flexible delivery system to meet our students’ changing needs.
• Provide an effective educator in every classroom.
• Ensure effective, visionary leaders in every school.
• Collaborate with families, communities, constituent groups and policy partners.
A full list of the Board’s goals and objectives can be found on the Kansas State Department of Education website.
In addition to adopting new strategic goals and objectives, the Board adopted a new mission statement, which reads:
To prepare Kansas students for lifelong success through rigorous academic instruction, 21st century career training and character development according to each student’s gifts and talents.
In conjunction with their new strategic agenda, Board members adopted a new logo that incorporates a newly created motto and focuses on the Board’s desire to prepare students for success in a global society. The new logo is prominent on materials related to the Board’s strategic agenda for May 2011-December 2012.
