TOPEKA—April 22, 2010—Students from Baldwin High School were named the national champions of the 2010 Real World Design Challenge held at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. last month.

Baldwin teacher Pam Davis coached students Carson Barnes, Brandon Baltzell, Mason Johnson, Shelby Gregory, Carrie Dietz, Mac Halpin, and Austin Kraus to beat out Hawaii, last year’s national champion. Baldwin High School also received an award for outstanding mentor collaboration. Sandy Barnes, mother of team member Carson Barnes, serves as the team’s mentor.
The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition that encourages high school students to solve real problems currently faced by the engineering industry. This year’s national challenge was to design and optimize a business jet wing and tail for a flight condition of 400 knots true airspeed and altitude of 37,000 feet. Details about this year’s challenge can be found at http://www.realworlddesignchallenge.org/pdf/RWDC_National_Challenge_2010.pdf

Baldwin High School has won the state competition both years since its inception in 2009. The team participated in the national contest last year, but did not place. The team, along with their coach, will present next month at the Kansas State Board of Education May meeting.
