Schools Honored for Character Education

TOPEKA – May 8, 2008 – Nine schools were recognized for their character-building programs Thursday morning at the Brown vs. Board National Historic Site.
The Kansas Schools of Character Recognition Program was recently developed by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Character Education Partnership. The schools acknowledged for their support of character education were determined by demonstrating various principles of character as well as their successful implementation of effective programs in their school.
Attorney General Stephen N. Six spoke briefly on the importance of character education in schools and expressed his sincere appreciation for the schools being recognized at the ceremony. Dr. Bill Wagnon, Chairman of the Kansas State Board of Education, also offered a few words regarding the importance of teaching character in schools as well as in the home, reminding everyone that only character endures.
Sterling High School and Robinson Middle School were recipients of the Kansas Schools of Character award for various character-building activities implemented throughout their institutions which not only effected their school, but also the community.
Among those receiving awards for the Kansas Promising Practices were Glenwood Ridge Elementary School, LaCrosse Elementary School, Maize District, St. Mark’s Charter School, Starside Elementary School, Tescott Grade School, and Wichita JROTC.
