Change in AYP/QPA Performance Targets

TOPEKA, May 10, 2007 / On Wednesday, May 10, 2007, the State Board of Education approved changes to the targets used by KSDE to determine adequate yearly progress by schools and districts in Kansas. The revised targets will smooth the transition to the new state assessments in reading and mathematics, providing a more reasonable path for improving student performance. The new targets avoid dramatic increases, particularly at the secondary levels, but still meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind that all children meet the achievement standards by 2014. This action by the Board will assist teachers and administrators in the school improvement process, the allocation of resources and a continued focus on student learning. Student achievement in Kansas has shown a significant improvement over the last several years, and we hope that by providing a better transition for student learning, teachers and students will be encouraged in efforts.

Below are the annual targets that will be used by the department for all calculations to determine the AYP and QPA status for districts and schools.

Please note that this change will require approval by the U.S. Dept. of Education. This process can take several months, and depending on the guidance, may require a change in the calculated AYP or QPA status of a school or district. We will keep you informed of the progress in this area.
