State Board Adopts New Science Standards

TOPEKA, February 13, 2007 / The Kansas State Board of Education adopted today science standards that are more in line with accepted education practices of the science community. The change came during the Board’s regular monthly meeting.

"Today the Kansas Board of Education returned its curriculum standards to mainstream science," said Board Chairman, Dr. Bill Wagnon. "This assures that Kansas children are appropriately educated for the 21st century."

The complete sets of standards (November 2005 adoption and today’s adoption) are available at www.ksde.org.  From the homepage, follow the links “Educators,” “Standards,” and “Science.”  The Recommendation for the Kansas Science Educations Standards is the standard adopted today.

If you wish to see the comparison of the two sets, open the Comparison Document.  To navigate this document, read the black and blue text (blue text also has strike-through) to see the standards adopted in 2005.  Read green, underlined text to see the standards adopted today.  Note that the black text is common between the two documents.

The new standards will be used in developing the new science assessments, which will be administered next year.
