Board of Education Suspends Commissioner Search

TOPEKA – February 10, 2010 – The Kansas State Board of Education moved Tuesday evening to suspend the search for a new Commissioner of Education.

The announcement came during the Board’s February meeting after a brief break into executive session. Upon returning, a motion was made for Dr. Diane DeBacker to remain Interim Commissioner until further notice. The motion carried 10-0. Though budgetary concerns were one reason for the decision, several Board members also expressed their satisfaction with Dr. DeBacker as they continue to make great strides in working to improve Kansas education.

“The Board is obviously very concerned about the cuts that have been made to the Department and we felt this would be a way to ease the financial strain,” said Board Chairman Janet Waugh. “However, we also feel we are making positive progress with Dr. DeBacker serving as Interim.”

The Board of Education had been actively recruiting for a new Commissioner through the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). Interviews of applicants were scheduled to begin next month.

Dr. Diane DeBacker has been serving as Interim Commissioner since the resignation of Dr. Alexa Posny in October 2009. Dr. DeBacker will also continue to serve as the Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Learning Services for the Kansas State Department of Education.
