TOPEKA – September 28, 2009 - Kansas State Department of Education today announced that Kansas schools and districts using Renaissance Learning’s STAR Reading and STAR Math assessments hosted on the Renaissance Place Real Time platform will be the first in the nation to have new reporting capabilities for assessing progress towards proficiency on the Kansas General Reading and Math Assessments.

Three new reports have been created for Kansas teachers and administrators to evaluate student progress towards proficiency and make instructional decisions based on sound data—well in advance of the annual state test.

The reports are the product of an ongoing partnership between the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and Renaissance Learning. Kansas is one of 10 states that participated in a multi-state consortium to research the predicative capabilities of STAR Reading and STAR Math assessments in relation to state accountability tests. Kansas is the first state in the consortium to offer the resulting reporting capability.

“The Kansas STAR proficiency reports are another tool that when put in the hands of our highly effective educators, continues to ensure all students achieve to high academic standards,” remarked Alexa Posny, Kansas Commissioner of Education.

The STAR Performance Report allows an administrator to forecast the percentage of students at each performance level on the Kansas General Reading and Math Assessments, which could serve as an early warning system. The STAR Group Performance Report provides teachers with an early identification of students at risk of failing to make adequate yearly progress in reading and math, and a Student Performance Report allows a teacher to evaluate individual student progress and provide benchmark data for helping a student become proficient.

The new reports are available to Kansas schools already using STAR Reading or STAR Math on the Renaissance Place Real Time platform. For more information, visit www.renlearn.com.
