KSDE Unveils Kansas Safe Schools Resource Center Webpage
TOPEKA, May 31, 2007 / In accordance with SB68, the Kansas Department of Education has created the Kansas Safe Schools Resource Center (KSSRC) webpage. The bill, passed by the 2007 Legislature, requires school districts to adopt policies prohibiting bullying on school property, in school vehicles, or at school-sponsored activities. The bill further requires each school district to adopt and implement a strategic plan to address bullying, which must include provisions for training and education of staff and students.
The KSSRC webpage will assist schools as they develop and implement a strategic plan to address bullying. KSDE will also be providing technical assistance in the form of a "Safe Schools Summit" this fall. For more information regarding the “Safe Schools Summit,” please contact Kent Reed, Counseling Education Consultant or Tracie Kalik, Education Program Consultant – Safe and Drug-Free Schools.
The bill also requires the State Board of Education to assist any school district deciding to offer grade-appropriate curriculum for character development programs. The bill becomes effective upon publication in the Kansas Register.
The KSSRC will help guide schools to resources relative to designing safe schools, bullying prevention and data resources. The webpage can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.ksde.org/KS_SAFE_SCHOOLS_RESOURCE_CENTER/index.html
