Kansas Department of Education recognizes the effectiveness of the Six Trait Writing Model as an instructional tool and an assessment tool. The Six Trait Writing Model is currently used to score the Kansas Writing Assessment. Although the scoring of writing assessments may change in the future, KSDE plans to keep the Six Trait Writing Model as a tool. Kansas included this statement in the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for the Kansas 15%. In the Production and Distribution of Writing section, “Strengthen writing craft—both independently and collaboratively—through a recursive writing and revision process and the use of the common vocabulary of the 6-Trait model.” Please use these tools, keeping in mind that as assessments change these tools still remain useful in teaching the writing craft.
