 AmeriCorps Kansas Programs

Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City

Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City
The youth of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City come from Kansas City's most disadvantaged circumstances -- unstable families, poverty, violence, exposure to serious risk factors. Their Club membership gives them a safe place to go before and after school, encouragement to stay in school, access to personal computers and controlled guidance on the Internet, improved attitudes toward the opposite sex, and the ability to resolve conflict without resorting to violence. AmeriCorps members will provide direct service delivery in the area of youth development and supplemental education activities at their Wyandotte County Unit.

AmeriCorps members will:
· Promote awareness of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City and AmeriCorps partnership services
· Interact with and inspire youth in an array of educational, cultural and recreational activities through the comprehensive programming of Project Learn after school and when school is out.
· Tutor Club members after school, assist with homework, help Club members complete their power pages and get parents actively engaged in Power Hour.
· Lead the Reading Circles program by: informing the youth of why reading is important; create reading profiles on Club members and gauge children's attitudes and beliefs about reading.

Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence
Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence
The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence operates after school programs from elementary schools throughout Lawrence and serve an average of 1,200 youth every day. The program would utilize 20 part-time AmeriCorps state members to serve as Academic Enrichment Facilitators, to identify students in need of academic support, specifically in reading and math, and to develop program activities that complement and supplement classroom learning, and work with community partners and Boys & Girls Club staff to ensure that programming is delivered appropriately in one-on-one and group settings. AmeriCorps members will work in teams of 2 at Club sites located in schools throughout Lawrence. With Boys & Girls Club staff and district personnel, they will develop and implement academic activities for the after school program that support school curricula. In conjunction with teachers, AmeriCorps members will also identify individuals and groups in need of focused one-on-one or group tutoring and will work to match local university students and other community volunteers to provide tutoring.

Catholic Charities of Salina, Inc.

Catholic Charities of Salina, Inc.
Catholic Charities of Kansas serving Salina, Manhattan, Dodge City, Great Bend and surrounding counties, proposes to address a rising unemployment rate due to the recession and low income minority communities, which include many recent immigrants, by training AmeriCorps members to serve as emergency assistance workers and youth program workers. Members will work with the software system known as the Mid America Assistance Coalition client tracking system, or “MAACLink”. This tracking system provides real time information on services used by clients. MAACLink is designed to enhance efficiencies in community collaborations and client services because the system provides information that reduces duplication of service or fund requests and maximizes opportunities for more clients to receive assistance. AmeriCorps members will utilize this software system and other community resources to screen individuals and families for benefits they may be eligible for as well as emergency assistance the community may be offering. In Salina, a member will be trained to work with Hispanic youth to address educational and social issues that are prevalent among many teens by assisting in the leadership training, prevention programs, and peer group activities of the youth groups at Catholic Charities.

Communities in Schools of Kansas
Communities in Schools of Kansas
Communities In Schools is the nation's leading organization dedicated to empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS has refined a process to bring needed community services into school buildings. Partnering with public school districts, Communities In Schools mobilizes local resources to provide a range of services by placing coordinators in school buildings. These coordinators serve as a bridge between schools and businesses, faith groups and not-for-profit agencies. Services provided by these local resources include mentoring, tutoring, health care, summer and after-school programs, family counseling, vocational learning and much more. Coordinators collaborate with teachers and administrators to identify students with needs. Next, they help those students address their needs so they can successfully learn, stay in school and become prepared for life. Five local affiliates provide services in 83 school sites to more than 20,000 Kansas students each year. Several sites around Kansas are targeted for program replication, and current sites are focused on providing more one on one services to students. AmeriCorps members will be placed at local service sites, either housed in schools or in the CIS affiliate office, and will follow a service plan that has been developed based on the CIS affiliate needs and the school Site Operations Plans to deliver direct service to the students of Kansas. CIS AmeriCorps will allow teachers to teach and students to learn by bringing much needed resources to the hardest to reach children.

Harvesters, the Community Food Network
Harvesters, the Community Food Network
Harvesters is a food bank program provides opportunities for AmeriCorps members to make a direct impact in the lives of Kansans in need. While serving at Harvesters, members help recruit volunteers, educate and enrich the lives of food recipients through nutrition education classes, and help serve more people in need by growing relationships with new agencies in the underserved portion of our service area. These member service activities are more essential than ever as the demand for food assistance continues to grow. Harvesters serve 16 counties in Kansas. Their service area in Kansas includes: Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Jefferson, Osage, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Wyandotte, and Miami counties.
Harvesters will engage AmeriCorps members as Specialists in specific areas of Harvesters' Kansas operations. The members, who will focus on community outreach, will allow Harvesters to increase the number of food drives in the community, increase the number of volunteers we have to sort food, educate and enrich the lives of food recipients through nutrition education and hands-on food preparation lessons, and help serve more people in need by growing relationships with new agencies in the underserved portion of our service area.

Four of the AmeriCorps positions will be stationed out of Harvesters' Kansas distribution center, located in Topeka, Kansas. The other two members will be stationed at Harvesters' main facility in Kansas City, Missouri; however, they will serve strictly in the Kansas portion of Harvesters' service area.

Kansas Outdoor AmeriCorps Action Team, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks
The Kansas Outdoor AmeriCorps Action Team will serve the State of Kansas by performing environmental service projects in state parks and local communities. Our program will focus in three areas: First, assisting emergency management agencies at disaster sites in response and restoration efforts. Second, restoring, developing, and mitigating the loss of, environmental resources within public managed lands. Third, developing new partnerships in outdoor recreation and forming outreach support groups through public presentations and education to schools, civic groups and local governments.

The Kansas Outdoor AmeriCorps Action Team (KOAAT) will continue to provide Kansas with 60 full- and part-time dedicated AmeriCorps members who will support the needs of Kansas in natural or man-made disaster response, environmental education, and environmental restoration. Targeted communities are largely rural, underserved, often without significant finances. Many are communities that are in economically or environmentally distressed counties that have been affected by the downturn in the economy and many communities that are still recovering from flooding. Members' roles will consist of responding to both natural and man-made disasters; serving on environmental restoration projects; and serving in schools to provide environmental and science-based educational sessions in classrooms and after school programs.

Kansas Campus Compact proposes to create the “Serve 2 Succeed” (S2S) AmeriCorps program to mobilize upper-level college students (as minimum-time AmeriCorps members) to serve as peer-mentors for first-year students at risk of withdrawal prior to degree completion. A significant portion of the mentoring will include joint mentor-mentee service activities. Heartland Medical Center
A subsidary program of United Way of Douglas County is the
Heartland Medical Center
The Heartland Medical Center was founded in 1999, in the city of Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, in order to provide medical services to the under-served. The facility is centrally located to the city's under-served population, and houses the primary care clinic and its associated programs. HMC currently provides full-time services through a combination of paid and volunteer staff. If granted this award, the Heartland Medical Clinic will place 7 full time AmeriCorps members in the clinic to provide health education, outreach and case management, follow up and referrals, volunteer recruitment and coordination of services for underserved populations, and assist with community development initiatives. During the 2010-2011 program year the AmeriCorps members have been able to serve more than 500 individuals by conducting outreach in the community (through community health fairs) or in reach in the clinic (one-on-one or support groups) and were able to provide information about early detection, prevention and control of diseases such as breast and cervical cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health benefiting approximately 1,000 people by sharing this information. Motivational interviewing and personal asset mapping were some of the tools used to empower the patients. The Heartland Medical Clinic staff guide the selected members in their efforts to become better professionals and citizens. Members are trained in areas such as cultural competency, case management and conflict resolution, which provide them with the skills to deal with daily situations at work and in their personal lives. In addition, they believe that the skills the members have acquired at the clinic have allowed three members to be accepted into medical school, for which we are very proud of.

Youth Volunteer Corps of America
Youth Volunteer Corps of America
The program addresses many needs, from quality after school programming to direct service for local nonprofits, but their main focus is addressing the need for frequent, high-quality service opportunities for youth in the Greater Kansas City area, regardless of income. They address this need by providing free, safe, diverse, group-based, fun, and educational service opportunities for 11 to 18 year-olds. They have steadily but successfully grown their program for the past 25 years as the need has grown, utilizing AmeriCorps members as Team Leaders, which has been instrumental to their growth. There are approximately 180,000 11-18 year olds in the Greater Kansas City area. A large percentage of those youth will want, or need, to complete community service hours before they finish high school. Many of them seek out their own venues to do so, but we are here for those youth who don't know where to start. Judging by the growth of their program every year and the number of youth they have had to turn away, that category is on the rise. The mission of the organization is to create and increase volunteer opportunities to enrich America's youth, address community needs and develop a lifetime commitment to service. The five full time YVCKC AmeriCorps members will primarily plan and supervise service-learning projects and recruit Youth Volunteers to serve on those projects.
