What is AmeriCorps?
The AmeriCorps program works on a local, state, and national level to provide AmeriCorps members to meet the vital needs of the country through intensive service. There are three branches to the program including AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA , and AmeriCorps NCCC. The Kansas Volunteer Commission directly manages the AmeriCorps Kansas program.
The KVC funds AmeriCorps Kansas programs in different locations throughout the state that focus on education, health, youth, emergency response, the environment, and responding to other direct community needs. Communities and organizations wishing to start an AmeriCorps program should contact the KVC or visit the grants section of the website.
The AmeriCorps Kansas members serve in schools, public agencies, and other organizations in programs funded by the KVC. Positions at the sites are either full or part time depending upon the needs of the local program.
Interested participants must be 17 years old or older with a dedication to community service.
Upon successful completion of their term AmeriCorps members are eligible for an Education Award to be used toward attendance at a qualified school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Qualification for the school and/or loan depends upon whether or not the school or financial agency is a "Title IV" institution. A financial aid officer would know if they are Title IV or not, as would officials at a fiscal institution.
AmeriCorps members may receive a modest stipend during their service, depending upon the local program's design.
