AmeriCorps Kansas September 2012 Highlights

On September 19, 2012 AmeriCorps State members Deb Williams and Kristina Lewis were invited to accompany Governor Brownback on an interpretive nature hike during the governor's visit to the Great Plains Nature Center in Pratt, Kansas on September 19th.  A photo of AmeriCorps State member Deb Williams accompanying Governor Brownback is available at:

Ms. Lewis and Ms. Williams are both second term members, and are enrolled in the "Kansas Outdoor AmeriCorps Action Team" AmeriCorps program hosted by the Kansas State Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.  During September the two members also assisted with a variety of programs at the Great Plains Nature Center.  Three days were devoted to KIDS C.A.N. (Kids Care About Nature) with 343 5th grade students from area schools.  Ms. Williams led a station for 184 of the students on the topic of volcanoes and earthquakes and their relationships to the natural world.  Ms. Lewis provided leadership for a group of students as they traveled to each of the stations.  The total number of students served during the month of September was 437.  The programs included, KIDS C.A.N., school groups visiting for field trips, evening adult programs, and Little Nature Lovers (3-5 years).
