2009 NAEP results not significantly different from 2007
TOPEKA—The 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) mathematics results are being released today. Results of the NAEP exams are measured in two ways: 1) with an average scale score (0-500), and 2) with achievement levels: basic, proficient, and advanced.
Nationally, Grade 4 results are unchanged from 2007. The average scale score in 2009 remained at 240. Additionally, the percentage of student performance at or above basic held steady. Since 2007, all subgroups are stable and unchanged.
In Kansas, the average scale score (245) remain stable and is not significantly different from the 2007 score. Eighty-nine percent of Kansas students performed at or above the NAEP basic level. This percentage is not significantly different than 2007 and is greater than that in 2000, which was 76 percent. The average score in Kansas is lower than those in 4 states/jurisdictions, higher than those in 33 states/jurisdictions, and not significantly different from those in 14 states/jurisdictions.
Nationally, 8th grade performance continues to improve. The average scale score in 2009 is 283, up from 281 in 2007. All racial/ethnic groups continue to make gains. Scores also increased across all socioeconomic groups, with 14 states posting improved scale scores.
In Kansas, the average scale score was 289, which is higher than the average scale score for all students nationally as well as public school students (282) in the nation. This score is not significantly different from the average score in 2007. The percentage of students in Kansas who performed at or above the NAEP Basic level is 79 percent, which is not significantly different than that in 2007. The average score in Kansas is lower than those in 7 states/jurisdictions, higher than those in 30 states/jurisdictions, and not significantly different from those in 14 states/jurisdictions.
“Kansas students continue to top the national average on the NAEP. There was no significant difference between the 2009 NAEP mathematics score and the 2007 NAEP score. Kansas scores at both fourth and eighth grade remain stable as did national scores,” according to Commissioner of Education Dr. Alexa Posny.
The 2009 NAEP results for reading will be released in the spring, 2010.
