For the 2008-09 testing cycle, 87.6% of the state’s public schools and 88.5% of districts made adequate yearly progress (AYP), even though the targets for mathematics and reading have been steadily increasing since 2002. This compares with 90% of public schools and 92% of districts making AYP last year and 89 % the previous year.

“The good news is that Kansas schools are achieving their goals in reading and mathematics even though these same goals have increased substantially over last year. By a persistent focus on academic standards, Kansas educators are clearly meeting the challenge of educating all students to high levels,” according to Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Alexa Posny.

The list of public schools and districts not making AYP was presented to the Kansas State Board of Education as required by federal legislation. Of the 1389 public schools in Kansas, 1217 made adequate yearly progress for 2008-09. Of the 295 districts in Kansas, 261 made AYP for the 2008-09 testing cycle.
