The Parents as Teachers program is designed to promote positive parenting and optimal child development. The Parents as Teachers program design coordinates with Part C Infant Toddler Early Intervention, Early Head Start and other early learning programs to provide a continuum of evidence based services that benefit families with young children within communities. The revised Foundational Curriculum incorporates the Strengthening Families Protective Factors throughout and aligns with the Kansas Strengthening Families (KSF) and Kansas Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems (KECCS) Plans.

NEW PAT PROGRAMS Including Healthy Families and Early Head Start/Head Start Programs newly blending with PAT

Depending upon your funding and program requirements, you may choose to become a Parents as Teaches Affiliate program or an Approved User of the Foundational Curriculum. Kansas Parents as Teachers programs funded by the Kansas State Department of Education must be Affiliate programs. Foundational Training for Existing Certified Parent Educators (Including Healthy Families and Early Head Start Partners)

Born to Learn certified parent educators will attend Foundational Training and be introduced to new concepts for working with families. This training will assure a smooth transition for those trained in the Born to Learn approach as they move toward model fidelity.
Kansas is providing regional training as requested by our PAT Programs. Each training opportunity will close at a maximum of 50 attendees. Priority registration will be 1) staff from the PAT programs requesting the regional training location, 2) staff from other Kansas PAT Programs, and 3) staff from Out-Of-State PAT Programs.

ALL individuals registered for training must agree to comply with the Ethical Agreement (pdf).

ALL PAT PROGRAMS

Parent Educators: Potential parent educators have the following qualifications: Demonstrated ability working with young children and their parents, along with either a 4 year degree from an accredited institute of higher education in early childhood education or a related field, a 2 year degree from an accredited institute of higher education in early childhood education or in a related field, 60 credit hours in early childhood education or a related field or high school diploma or GED. Educators with less than an Associate's degree must have a minimum of 2 years previous supervised work experience with young children and/ or parents. Kansas programs funded through the Department of Education must have a minimum of 60 credit hours in early childhood education or related coursework. A four-year degree is preferable.

Supervisors: For the supervisor, a college degree or beyond in early childhood education, elementary education, behavioral or social sciences or a related field is recommended. He or she must also successfully complete the Model Implementation Training. In addition, the supervisor should have demonstrated ability to work with adults and young children. It is highly recommended that supervisors attend the full week of training when possible.
