John Bacon joined the State Board of Education in 1999, representing District 3. Prior to joining the State Board he served on the site council for Tomahawk Elementary School in USD 233 for five years. In addition, 2013 marks the beginning of the eighteenth year John has served on the Olathe City Council. He was elected as Vice Chair of the State Board, serving from 2005 to 2007. He has also represented the State Board on the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Board of Directors from 2001-2004 and the KSHSAA Executive Board. 

John earned his Bachelor's degree in accounting from Mid- America Nazarene University in 1985 and is as a certified public accountant. He and his wife, Melanie, have been married for 28 years and have three children.
