Janet Waugh, representing District 1, has been involved with schools and children for more than 30 years. Prior to joining the State Board of Education in 1999, Mrs. Waugh served for more than 15 years on the Turner Board of Education in USD 202, including eight years as president. She also held state and regional offices for the PTA and the Kansas Association of School Boards. Janet has been elected to serve as State Board Chair from 2009 through 2010. Other Board service included State Board's Vice Chair in 2001 through 2002, Chairman of the Board for 2003-2004 and for 2009-2010; and Chair of the Board Policy Committee for 2007 and 2008. In 2008 Governor Sebelius appointed Janet to serve on the Governor's P-20 Council, which is committed to fulfilling the state's responsibility for delivering and funding an integrated high quality educational system that will prepare Kansans for life and work.
Janet has received numerous awards for her work in education, including the "Outstanding Accomplishment in Education Award" from the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, and the "Kansas Friend of Education" award. The Turner Development Association has honored Janet with the "Bright Light Award," and she was among the first inductees into the Turner Walk of Fame.
Janet is retired from a family-owned used car business. She lives in Kansas City and has two children - her daughter teaches in Olathe and her son was a band director in several Kansas districts for 14 years and is currently a pilot in Dallas. Janet is the proud grandmother of "4 perfect grandchildren".
