The increased focus on student assessment results has led to an understanding that teachers must be assessment literate in order to provide the best instructional opportunities to students. According to W. James Popham, who provides the video introductions to these modules:
“Just about everyone realizes that if a teacher does a great instructional job, that teacher’s students will usually perform better on tests. It’s the other side of the equation that’s less often understood, namely that how a teacher tests — the way a teacher designs tests and applies test data — can profoundly affect how well that teacher teaches.”

The KSDE Assessment Literacy Project includes 21 different modules designed to enhance the assessment literacy of educators in an online, interactive format that can be used individually or in groups. Module topics are arranged around four essential questions:
- What is a good assessment?
- What do tests measure?
- How do tests measure learning?
- How do teacher and students prepare for and take tests?
