Partnership for 21st Century Skills

Common Core State Standards Initiative
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Kansas Education Resource Center (KERC)
The Kansas Education Resource Center contains tools for teachers to use in aligning classroom instruction and assessment to Kansas’ academic standards.

The Lexile Framework for Reading
Lexile measures describe the reading level of a student and the difficulty of a text on a single scale and are linked with scores on the Kansas reading assessments in Grades 3-8 and high school. Teachers and parents can use Lexile measures to select books that are likely to improve the reading and comprehension skills of students.

The Kansas State Department of Education is a Verizon Thinkfinity rollout partner organization that provides the infrastructure to share the program throughout Kansas. KSDE works with Verizon Thinkfinity to organize professional development on effective Internet integration and align Kansas standards to the Thinkfinity resources (http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1678). We recommend that educators take advantage of the resources located at Thinkfinity.org that are available at no charge from the national Verizon Thinkfinity program, and also available on the KERC website (www.kerc-ks.org) and the Kansas Thinkfinity website (http://kansasverizonthinkfinity.ning.com/).
