Podcasts and Podcasting

Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video programs, over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term, coined in 2004, is a blend of the terms "iPod", a popular portable audio device, and "broadcasting."

The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading feeds like RSS or Atom.

More information about Podcasts and Podcast software can be found at Wikipedia or on this 'Podcasting Information' page

Understanding the Gallup Student Poll: Assessing Hope, Engagement, and Well-Being in America’s Students

Thumbnail
Gary Gordon, Ph.D., Gallup Consulting

A review of the mission, purpose, and process of the Gallup Student Poll, a multi-year effort to engage the largest-ever group of America’s students in grades 5 through 12 to assess their hope for the future, engagement with school, and well-being in the community. With links to grades, credits earned, and achievement scores, districts will have an opportunity to learn important information for improving students’ opportunity for life success.

The Gallup Student Poll is free to districts and captures the youth voice, a critical but too often missing part of the national dialogue surrounding dropout prevention and college readiness. The poll gives young people a forum to express the opportunities and challenges in their daily lives, and supplies teachers, administrators, and community leaders with an accurate, useful, and holistic picture of students and the outcomes they desire.

21 st Century Skills—We’re Already 10 Years In…What’s Happening?

Thumbnail

Dayna Richardson, Assistant Superintendent, Buhler USD 313
Kathy Boyer, Education Program Consultant, Teacher Education & Licensure, KSDE

21st Century skills combine technology literacy, critical thinking, creativity and mastery of core subject matter. An initial step to ensure these skills become part of Kansas’ schools was the creation of The Profile of a 21st Century Learner and the Profile of a 21st Century Learning Environment. Following field review and input, the profiles were endorsed by the State Board of Education in December 2008. Organized into 15 unifying themes, these two profiles are beginning to shape the review of content area standards, integration of academic and technical education, the development of a new generation of assessments, etc. Many schools and districts across the state are already journeying down the path toward 21st century learning while others are uncertain of how and where to begin. Come join us for a discussion of the 21st Century Profiles for Learners and the Environment. Learn how one district kicked off the school year with a serious discussion and engaging activities for staff to highlight the importance of intentional planning and focus on 21st century skills.

The Global Achievement Gap

Thumbnail

Jim Toole, President & CEO; Senior Fellow, Compass Institute & the University of Minnesota School of Social Work & College of Education

There are two achievement gaps today. The first is based on the education America provides middle-class versus low-income students. The second and less visible gap is between all American students and their international peers--what Tony Wagner has called "the Global Achievement Gap." We’ll explore the mismatch between what we teach and assess with the mindset and skills students will need to succeed both in 21st century careers and citizenship.
